Background of the Study:
Social media has become a dynamic force in disseminating environmental information and mobilizing public action. In Yenagoa Local Government, Bayelsa State, platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are increasingly used to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainable practices (Ifeanyi, 2023). Environmental challenges such as pollution, deforestation, and climate change require immediate public engagement, and social media provides an accessible medium to educate and inspire communities toward eco-friendly behaviors (Chinwe, 2024). Digital campaigns, interactive content, and real-time updates facilitate a community-based approach to environmental management, enabling citizens to participate in environmental conservation efforts. However, issues such as misinformation, superficial engagement, and limited technical know-how may hinder the effectiveness of these online initiatives (Ejiro, 2023). This study explores how social media campaigns influence environmental attitudes and actions in Yenagoa Local Government, aiming to identify best practices and barriers in leveraging digital platforms for environmental advocacy.

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the widespread use of social media for environmental campaigns, the extent to which these efforts translate into tangible environmental awareness and action in Yenagoa remains uncertain. Misinformation and low engagement levels are significant barriers that may dilute the impact of digital campaigns. This situation underscores the need for a detailed assessment of the effectiveness of social media in promoting environmental awareness (Ifeanyi, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the role of social media in promoting environmental awareness in Yenagoa Local Government.

  2. To identify challenges in using digital platforms for environmental advocacy.

  3. To propose recommendations for enhancing online environmental campaigns.

Research Questions:

  1. How effective is social media in raising environmental awareness in Yenagoa?

  2. What challenges affect the success of environmental campaigns on social media?

  3. How can digital strategies be improved for better environmental advocacy?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Social media significantly enhances environmental awareness in Yenagoa Local Government.

  2. Challenges such as misinformation impede the effectiveness of online environmental campaigns.

  3. Improved digital engagement strategies lead to higher environmental awareness.

Significance of the Study:
The study will inform environmental agencies and digital campaign designers on optimizing social media strategies to drive sustainable behavior change, contributing to a greener Yenagoa Local Government (Olu, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing the role of social media in promoting environmental awareness in Yenagoa Local Government, Bayelsa State.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Social Media: Internet-based platforms for social interaction and information sharing.

  2. Environmental Awareness: Understanding and concern for environmental issues and sustainability.

  3. Digital Campaigns: Organized efforts using digital media to promote a specific cause.
